Student leaders play an important role in school as they help teachers run the school smoothly and efficiently. They also serve as role models and mentors for other students.

This article explains the different types of student leaders in school and what they do. Student leaders are elected by their peers or nominated by their teachers to help run the school and maintain discipline. The article describes the following student leadership roles and their responsibilities:

Head prefect 

The head prefect is the highest-ranking student leader in the school. They are in charge of the other prefects in their gender group. They also represent the students’ voice and coordinate with the teachers and administrators. Some of their duties are:

  • Organising and supervising the prefects’ body
  • Enforcing the school rules and regulations
  • Reporting any problems or issues to the teachers or administrators
  • Leading the students in assemblies, ceremonies, or events

Assistant head prefect

The assistant head prefect is the second-in-command after the head prefect. They assist the head prefect in their tasks and take over their role if they are absent or unavailable. Some of their duties are:

  • Supporting and advising the head prefect
  • Delegating tasks to other prefects
  • Resolving conflicts or disputes among students or prefects
  • Acting as the head prefect when needed

Time keeper

The timekeeper is responsible for keeping track of the time and ringing the bell or gong for different activities in school. They ensure that the school schedule is followed and that students are punctual. Some of their duties are:

  • Setting and adjusting the clock or timer
  • Ringing the bell or gong at the right time for classes, breaks, meals, prayers, etc.
  • Reminding students and teachers of the time
  • Reporting any delays or errors to the head prefect or teachers

Head monitor

The head monitor is like the leader of all the class monitors in school. They oversee the academic and disciplinary performance of the students in each class. They also liaise with the teachers and other student leaders. Some of their duties are:

  • Checking and recording the attendance and homework of students
  • Maintaining order and cleanliness in the classrooms
  • Distributing and collecting materials or assignments
  • Evaluating and reporting the progress and behaviour of students

Entertainment prefect

The entertainment prefect is in charge of providing entertainment to the students during breaks, weekends, or special occasions. They also manage the equipment and facilities used for entertainment. Some of their duties are:

  • Selecting and playing music, movies, games, etc.
  • Setting up and operating speakers, projectors, consoles, etc.
  • Monitoring and regulating the volume and content of entertainment
  • Repairing or replacing any damaged or faulty equipment

Sports prefect

The sports prefect is responsible for organising and promoting sports and games in school. They also train and coach the students who participate in sports competitions or tournaments. Some of their duties are:

  • Planning and scheduling sports activities and events
  • Providing equipment and materials for sports and games
  • Encouraging and motivating students to join sports teams or clubs
  • Representing and leading the school in sports matches or contests

Dormitory captain

The dormitory captain is assigned to look after the students who live in the boarding section of the school. They ensure that the dormitories are safe, comfortable, and conducive to living and learning. Some of their duties are:

  • Inspecting and cleaning the dormitories regularly
  • Enforcing curfew and lights-out rules
  • Identifying and reporting any illegal items or activities in the dormitories
  • Assisting and counselling students who have problems or needs

Head of scouts

The head of scouts is elected by the members of the scouting club at school. They lead and guide the scouts in learning various skills and values. They also organise scouting activities and camps. Some of their duties are:

  • Teaching and demonstrating scouting skills such as knotting, camping, first aid, etc.
  • Instilling scouting values such as loyalty, honesty, courage, etc.
  • Planning and executing scouting projects such as community service, environmental protection, etc.
  • Coordinating with other scouting groups or organisations

Religious prefect

The religious prefect is appointed to facilitate the religious practises of the students in school. They cater to different religions that are allowed by the school. They also foster religious harmony and tolerance among students. Some of their duties are:

  • Arranging and conducting religious sessions or prayers according to each religion
  • Ensuring that religious sessions do not exceed their allotted time
  • Inviting and hosting religious leaders or speakers to lead or address students
  • Educating students about different religions and cultures

Student leaders play an important role in school as they help teachers run the school smoothly and efficiently. They also serve as role models and mentors for other students. However, student leaders should not abuse their power or authority over other students. They should also follow the rules and regulations of the school and respect the teachers and administrators.
